Back home and back on track...

Dang, time just seems to keep getting away from me! We've been away for the last week...spent 6 days with my family in the Detroit area. It was a great trip, the drive went smoothly, we had great family time, spent time with my nephew & nieces (oh, and their parents) and got to see some aunts, uncles & cousins that I hadn't seen in a long time...I took my spinning wheel and my knitting with me, got some stuff done but not alot. I had hoped to meet up with some friends while I was home but time just ran out and honestly with losing as many members of my family as we have in the last couple years my family was my priority and I think (hope) my friends can understand that. So now it's back to the grind, I did get some great stuff for some new stitch markers & I just need to add a couple more little things and my box for SP10 will be in the mail (probably on Monday)...tomorrow I'm going out to learn how to shear sheep!!! I'm excited to learn and anxious to see how much the lambs have grown since I was there last! I'll try to post again tomorrow and have some pics then!

June already???

Wow, where has this year gone?!?!? The kids are out of school already and I'm on vacation in 5 days. I am looking so forward to my week off and I have so much to do before we leave!!!!! The bright points of recent is that my motorcycle is up and running...I'm riding it as much as I can which I enjoy and it is helping my gas budget...the gardens are in at Fiber Whims and I have planters out on my cleaned patio, the patio furniture and grill are out and my wireless internet is finally actually working again after almost a year of not being able to figure out why it wasn't working...and I got a new laptop which I am totally in love with even though Vista has had me pulling my hair out! The best part of the new laptop so far is that right now, I'm sitting out on the patio with Charlie enjoying the smell of the last of the lilacs looking at my plants and getting this updated! My commitment with the new laptop is to update this at least once a week and to get some of my knitting patterns published on here. The plan is for one pattern a month...Well, I'm going to close this for now and go take a shower and head to work...Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Dang, it's been a while....

Things have been so crazy around here that the last month has just disappeared on me...I am behind on everything and doing me best to re-group and catch up...please bear with me...

A New Week...

The last week or so has been kind of rough for me...there hasn't been a particular reason, but I have really been in a funk and and have found myself wanting to "hibernate"...I don't think our recent weather has helped either, the sun is finally back out today, but since last Tuesday night we have gotten 38-57 inches of snow around here...my yard has about 36 inches with much higher drifts. So for the last week I have pretty much found myself just going to work and coming home and crashing...Kait has been gone since last Sunday and since she left, I have just not been able to get motivated to do anything...even stuff I like and want to do...I did make my Wednesday trip out to Fiber Whims last week (it takes more than snow to get me to miss my afternoon out there!!!!!) and on Saturday we had a babyshower there as part of our monthly pot-luck (the shower went great, and those were definitely the high points of my week). But, I have been really bad about keeping in touch with my Secret Pals, sending email and getting my rear to to post office and I apologize for that....
So , today I woke up to the sun shining and actually got my but out of bed and took Charlie for a long walk...the exercise was good for both of us and so was the sunshine! Kait called and she is on schedule with her flights coming home today...her vacation was fun, but she's ready to come home and see Charlie... and when we got home from our walk, the mailman was here with not one, but two packages for me!!!
The first one was from Ruby for the Knitted Purse Exchange...and let me tell you, she knows how to spoil a girl!!! When I opened the box the, there was a note from her and a bunch of tissue wrapped packages...the first package I opened was this!!!!!

Isn't it beautiful?!?!?! I love the color and the cables!!! And I have an outfit that it will be perfect with this spring/summer!!! And then there was the rest of my goodies...I just want to say first that when I started signing up for exchanges, a friend of mine voiced a concern that i would be disappointed because I really try to put though into the gifts I give and really try to give things that fit the person... and WOW, when I opened the other goodies Ruby sent, she couldn't have done better!!!
Ruby sent me a great pic of a polar bear snow statue (how cool!), a beautiful knit washcloth with a polar bear, adorable polar bear note cards, a HUGE dark chocolate candy bar!!! And a Fleece Artist sock kid with amazing yarn!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much Ruby!!! Hugs!!!!!!!

And my other package was from Bridgett for the handspun orphan exchange...and WOW, was the wait for this yarn worth it!!! She send me a beautiful skein of soft, wonderful Coopworth/NZ yarn with BEADS!!! She named it "Chocolate-Chocolate Chip" which is so fitting!!! I can foresee my leather dress coat with a lacy scarf made of this yarn!!! She also send me some extra goodies...dark chocolate almonds and a dark chocolate candy bar...and some stitch markers that as just So cute!!! Thank you so much Bridgett!!! This was the first exchange I signed up for and you have turned a disappointing experience into a great one!!!

I don't know what i did to deserve such great pals, but I am so grateful for them!!! Today they have motivated me to get off my rear and get my mini-skeins for "The Yarn Thing" labeled and in a box...and to get a package for my "orphan" ready for the post office and to get a couple emails sent and my bag for the knitted bag exchange will be done & felted today to get out by the end of the week...Thanks so much to my pals, I am grateful for you and for your thoughtfulness!!!

Spring? Maybe? Please?

Spring was here...or so we thought...then Tuesday night, it started...and Wednesday, my drive to the spinning shop looked like this... (18 inches of snow and I still didn't miss my Wednesday afternoon!!!)

Now I know that I made the choice to live where I do...and I do love it here (usually) but this is ridiculous!!! We had green grass on Monday, the crocus & daffodils were starting to come up!!! Now we just have snow for Charlie to play in again! (And he does like playing in it!)
So my afternoon at Fiber Whims was great...relaxed, went back to spinning my merino, had a cup of tea and got to see and play with the new Victoria that came in yesterday...OMG it is so cute!!! I have said that I didn't think I would ever want/need another wheel besides my Schacht...but now, I don't know....I love that little wheel, it took me a few minutes to get used to it, but it was spinning so nice for me and the case and everything are so great!!! Guess I'm going to have to save my pennies...

After I got home from the shop, I got a call asking if I wanted to go out to McLain's State Park and look at the waves on Lake Superior at the breakwall...rumor was there were up to 30ft waves...

Well, the rumor wasn't too far off...I don't know that they were 30ft, but from how they were hitting the breakwall and the lighthouse, I'd guess they were close...the pic doesn't really do them justice, but you can kind of see the lighthouse in the background. We probably walked close to a mile along the ridge above the shore line...
Then as the sun set and it started to get dark, we walked back to the truck along the road...it was a fun hike, but boy was i glad to get back in the truck and turn on my heated seat when we were done!!!

Meet Charlie!

Well, I said we weren't getting another dog...and I really did mean it...but, then we met Charlie... Kait & I went to the Humane Society Saturday afternoon and met this little guy...

We didn't bring him home Saturday, but we went and saw him again Monday... and...

We brought him home today. So now we have puppy kisses again...

While we know that no dog will ever replace Benny, I think Charlie will be a good addition to our family... He is sweet and amazingly calm for a baby... (5 months)...More soon....

Is it Wednesday yet?

Ok, I know that for most people Wednesday is hump day and the half way point of the week, but for me it is always a day off...and this week, it's my only day off. I just want it to get here...to wake up on my own, go workout, then go spend the afternoon at the fiber shop spinning, chatting, eating lunch & drinking tea...then to come home, finish the last of the "puppy-proofing" and go get Charlie...so, I repeat, is it Wednesday yet?

Happy Monday

Well, as of last night I have heard from all of my pals in my current exchanges! I am excitedly packing a small box to send for my sp10 downstream pal...haven't decided if I'm going to do multiple small boxes or one big one, but she has a birthday coming up soon so she will most definitely be getting goodies for that!
I am still in aww of the beautiful fibers I got last week...I want to get some pics of them up here but I can't find my camera (ugh) I know it's here somewhere but it is hiding pretty well...I also got the Superwash Merino/nylon blend roving I ordered from Leah (http://www.freewebs.com/yarnortale/ ) in the mail today, it is great!!! I am going to be doing my first dyeing workshop in May and I think I am going to use this fiber...maybe dye half as roving and half as spun yarn...I think it will be fun to play with!
And in other news, i think we are going to be getting a new puppy...I said i wasn't going to get another dog but Kait and i went to the Humane Society Saturday on our way home from the fiber shop and while we were there we met Charlie...he is a 6 month old black lab mix...he looks like a lab only he's a bit smaller and softer....if we can get things together, we're going to bring him home on Wednesday when I have the evening off...I'll have to find the camera for that!

Catching up...

Wow, the last few weeks have just flown by...guess that's what happens when you are working 60+ hours a week tho...so tonight, I'm relaxing and catching up on a couple things...I just sorted all the roving I got this week, there was a special sale at my local shop and I got some great stuff!!! The shop is now carrying Ashland Bay fibers and I just love them!!! I bought more of the fawn corridale and midnight merino that I have been working on...and I got some white merino and then I got my favorite...the teal multi colonial!!! I need to take a pic of it but I can't find my camera right now...the pic on the web site just does not do it justice at all!!! I don't know yet what it will become, but i do know it will be something for me....

I did get quite a bit of spinning done this week too...trying to finish up the yarn for the Sheep-thrills "Yarn Thing" making up my mini-skeins tonight to see how much I have done and then I'll finish spinning the rest tomorrow tomorrow...I'm going to do some knitting tonight too, I need to get my purse for the Knitted Purse Swap done and I really need to start knitting on the pocket shawl...LOL so much for my idea of doing one Christmas present a month, I'm already 3 months behind!!!

And on to updates on my exchanges...I have heard from my new upstream pal for the spinners exchange (she seems really fun!) and have emailed my downstream person...I have picked what I will be spinning for her and hope to get it sent out by the end of next week...and I have also been in contact with my downstream pal for sp10 (it's amazing how alike we seem!)... I have also been keeping in contact with Mary (my downstream pal from ITE3) and I'm hoping we're going to get to meet up next time I go visit my family! I am so excited about the people I am meeting with the exchanges...it amazes me how much the internet can shrink the world....

SP10 and stuff...

Wow...the last week has just been crazy...I have been working so much that I am behind on everything and Kait's surprise 16th b-day party was Sunday...it went off great and she is no longer angry at the world over everybody "forgetting" her birthday. I got my assignment for SP10 today and i am so excited!!! From reading her blog and questionnaire we seems to have alot in common...I am glad I got another spinner and have what I think are some great ideas!!!

Spring?????

I think spring may be upon us up here...it was a weird winter with not nearly enough good skiing and then our only real storm (lightning, thunder, wind and about 2ft of snow) last week and now this is the 4th day in a row of bright, sunny, blue sky days with temp into the 40's...I'm actually motivated to get going with spring cleaning (which is going to be major this year) but today I worked day shift and have to go back in a couple hours to work the closing shift and I have a sick kid...hopefully tomorrow I can get some stuff done before work...

Great day...

Well, my baby girl turned 16 today...I can't believe how quickly she is growing up! It was a beautiful sunny, clear day and we went out after school to the tea room in town (a special "girly" place to us) and spent a couple hours together before she went to teach karate...she got to open her presents, and I got to open mine! I got my package for ITE3, it came all the way from Japan! Rikako did a great job of spoiling me!!! the bag is beautiful and I can't wait to start a pair of socks for myself with the great sock yarn she sent me!!! The Kit-Kat bars are cool too! Flavors that I've never even heard of!!!
Ok, I'm going to cose this for now and catch up on a few other things...

Motivation...

I don't know why, but I am having the most horrible time getting motivated today...and it's Wednesday, my spinning shop day!. I am usually out there by now but haven't made it out the door yet...ugh...and it actually looks pretty outside today...bright blue skies & bright white snow :)
Tomorrow is my baby girl's 16th birthday, I can't believe how fast she has grown up...I have been sitting here all morning thinking about how far she has come...from a sick little preemie ( I can't even talk about everything they told us about what would be wrong with her IF she survived) to a beautiful, smart, capable young woman....I am so amazed by and proud of her...We're going to dinner for her birthday tonight, she doesn't have time tomorrow...she has to teach a karate class then has one herself...going for her blue belt in May :)
My bag for ITE3 should be getting to it's new owner today or tomorrow...I hope she likes it!!! I am always so nervous when I give gifts that I have made to people...she did comment on the pic I posted on the ITE3 blog which is a good sign I think! I also got an email and tracking number for the bag I have coming- from Japan(!)- I hope it gets here soon!!!
Well, on that note, I'm going to actually start my day...spinning shop, quick shopping stop, pick up the kid, dinner, then 90 (yes, 90) cupcakes for her to take to school tomorrow...I need to learn to say no more often!

Swaps, Exchanges and KALs and Spinning

My Merino & Corridale yarn...
(one of these days I'll figure out how to get the pics where I want them....maybe....)

Just an update on my progress on the swaps, exchanges and KAL I have signed up for...I just finished packing up boxes for my pals in the Spin-to-Knit Handspun Exchange and the International Tote Exchange 3...I am happy with and proud of what I am sending and I'll post a pic of the tote after it has been recieved. I still haven't recieved anything from either exchange but i am hoping to soon! :)
I have picked the pattern and have the yarn (and some goodies) for the Knitted Purse Swap, that project will be started this week...and I need to get back to work on my Mystery Shawl, I am still on clue 3...I am also signed up for Secret Pal 10 and am waiting for my pal assignment on that so i can start planning :)

On the spinning front, I have been spinning Merino and Corridale and I am plying them together into yarn for a shawl...planning for the Aran Pocket Shawl from Folk Shawls...I am in love with both fibers and am so happy with how they are plying together... it is amazing how the colors are changing as it plys...the Corridale is a honey color and the Merino is black with reds and blues...together beautiful burgundies and deep navy blues appear...not what i expected, but i love it...

Been a while...

Wow, It's been a while since I've posted on here. We have been so out of our routine here the last couple weeks that it's been crazy...so my goal this weekend it to catch up on things including this. And of course my knitting !

Ok, an update on my status with my exchanges, the second skein of yarn for my Spin to Knit Exchange is done, I will be mailing that with a couple goodies out on Monday!!! I finished my bag for ITE3 once, decided it wasn't going to be the size I wanted, pulled it out and started over...the knittinf should be done today, felting tomorrow picking up goodies at the fiber shop Tuesday and mailing wednesday...For the Knitted Purse Exchange, I have the yarn, I have the pattern and It will be cast on and started tonight...the Mystery Shawl has kind of taken a back seat for the last couple weeks, but I will get back to it and I am happy with how it looks...

In spinning news, I started spinning merino for the first time and I am in love!!! I'm spinning a single of the merino and plying it with a corridale single and I love how it is turning out...I will take and post some pics this week...

Thank you...

I just want to thank everyone for showing us so much support these last few days...I can't even put into words how much every message has meant to us...things are slowly getting back to normal here, at least as normal as they can be..

Horrible day...

Well what started out as a good morning turned out to be one of the worst days in my life...we lost our 4 year old golden retriever this afternoon...Ben has been ours since he was 1 week old, we brought him home at 6 weeks in December 2002...he was the best dog we have ever had and suffered a twisted bowel today...the vet did surgery but, as she told me, by the time he showed symptoms it was too late...

Be at peace Benny....

International tote exchange III

Still haven't got my assignment for the tote exchange...hoping to hear something soon!

Ready to start!

Just read the questionnaire of the person I am sending a purse to in the knitted purse swap and I have some great ideas and am looking forward to getting started this week! The mystery shawl has met with distractions...got my yarn balled, picked my needles and got ready to start...couldn't find my stitch markers...but in looking for my stitch markers, I did a bunch of beading stuff that I forgot I had (and if you know me, you can see where this is going...) so I decided to organize the beading stuff and make stitch markers...I have the attention span of a flea lately!!! So, now the stitch markers are made, the yarn & needles are ready and I think I'm going to make a pot of tea and try to get clue 1 done tonight. Wish me luck!

Mystery Shawl

Well, I have dug through the stash and picked my yarn for the Mystery Shawl KAL...It is Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud, the color is Stream...still not sure on my needle size but I'm thinking size 4... the first step is to get it wound into balls! I have tomorrow off so I'm hoping to get one skein wound tonight and start clue 1 tomorrow...

Knitted Purse Swap - Update & questionnaire

Just got my Secret Pal assignment for the swap and got an email from the Pal that was assigned me...so now I'm really getting excited about this! Had a fun evening tonight drove 100miles each way to go to Wendy's & Target with Kaitlyn, just because, after work...had a good talk during the drive (it's amazing how different teenagers are when they are captive in the car :) ! ) So now I'm going to do my questionnaire and maybe knit a bit before I crash...

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

Basically I like natural fibers...wools, alpaca, bamboo, etc...I like to try new stuff too... I really don't care for acrylics...

I started knitting about 3 years ago, a friend got me started going with her to a knitting group that used to meet here at a coffee shop on Mondays...that group has pretty much broken up but now a bunch of us spend Wednesday afternoons at the local fiber/spinning/weaving shop...I guess i would consider myself an intermediate knitted...

I have a wish list on my website and will be putting together an Amazon list soon...

5. What is your favorite scent?

Lilac or lavender...

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

YES!!! LOL Dark chocolate & swedish fish

Favorites: Natural earthtones...blues...teals...
Dislikes: Oranges...pinks (unless they are part of a multi-color)

Right now it's just me & my 15 year old daughter (Kaitlyn) at home...
We have a golden retriever, Ben, and an angora bunny, Bean.

10. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

I like to do projects that are small enough to take with me...socks, hats, mittens...

11. What are you knitting right now?

Made a couple of ipod socks this weekend...and just started my first attempt at a lace shawl...

12. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum or plastic?

I find I use my dpns and circulars the most...just got my first bamboo needle (size 13, 16 inch) and I love it...I think I will start to gradually replace my other needles with bamboo or wood...

13. Is there anything you collect?

Yarn...fiber...knitting, spinning & cookbooks...oh and polar bear & sea turtle stuff...

Well, if anyone reading this has anymore questions just ask...

Long week

It's been kind of a long week here as I have what I think is the worst cold I have ever had in my life...I didn't do much spinning this week, did a bit of knitting, made an ipod sock for the kid out of some left over hand painted wool that was in my stash...easy quick project that didn't require a pattern or much thought and she loved :) My local fiber/spinning/weaving shop is starting a consignment room so I've been trying to think of some things to do to put in there and I'm also tryung to plan for next Christmas already (LOL this from me that procrastinated until the last possible moment!!!) I have some ideas for the purse exchange I signed up for but need to wait to make my decision until I get my assignment and read their questionare... We were going to go skiing today but this cold has got me so down I slept instead, working tonight then all day tomorrow and days Monday, so hopefully we'll get some skiing in Monday evening...My exciting news for the week was that the yarn I sent to my secret pal in the spin to knit exchange got to her safely and she was happy with it! I can't wait to see the pics!

Spin to Knit Secret Pal Exchange

I sent my first skein of yarn out to my secret pal for the Spin to Knit exchange this week...I hope she enjoys it and has as much fun using it as I did making it! I also got an email for the secret pal that got my name...I've never signed up for anything like this before and I'm glad I did...

Bean Bunny

Here are pics of Bean...she has grown so much since I got here and she is a really cool bunny...her favorite treats are green beans and strawberries...I can't wait to start spinning with her wool and make myself some mittens!

It's snowing!!!

We're actually finally getting some snow today! If it keeps coming down like it is maybe we'll head out skiing tomorrow evening (would be the first time of the year). I'm trying to get caught up on a few things around here today... got the yarn I made for the secret pal exchage ready to go out this morning, just need to write a note and drop it at the post office tomorrow on my way to Fiber Whims. Put a button on my lasted knitting project, a cute little headband that I knit in a hand painted wool/alpaca blend single that I don't even know where I got but had just the right amout for. I'm going to close this for now, go bring in the dog, clean my apt and get my chores done...I am going to try to post again tonight and actually put pics of the new wheel up on here...we'll se if I can figure it out! LOL

First Entry

Wow, I think I actually got this thing set up! Just a short note tonight, it was a great weekend here...got my skein of yarn for the Spin-to-Knit Secret Pal Exchange done...will send it out on Tuesday... went to a very nice potluck at Fiber Whims (our local spinning/weaving shop), got some housework done and spent some time with my daughter...and it is actually snowing tonight so maybe we will actually get some snow for skiing :)
Anyway, I'm going to close this for now and will play with it more after work tomorrow...
